This was Roman Polanski's first feature, made in his native Poland, and the themes that would later haunt his great Hollywood films (Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown) are already in evidence: cruelty, violence and the complexity of close relationships. A successful sportswriter on holiday with his wife picks up a handsome young hitchhiker and invites him to join them on a short boat trip.
