KISSED

From Canadian director Lynn Stopkewich comes the first -- and probably last -- feel-good movie about necrophilia. Even as a child, Sandra wasn't like other little girls: Rather than fuss with kittens and dolls, she searched the woods for dead animals she could pet, sniff and bury in her own little pet cemetery. The adult Sandra (Molly Parker) likes her men like her woodland creatures. So, sensible girl that she is, she gets a job in a mortuary and manages to squeeze in a little slap-and-tickle with the corpses before they're whisked away. She's contented... until she meets one special (living) guy (Peter Outerbridge), who may be willing to go that extra mile in the name of love. Necrophilia doesn't usually equal love story: When dealt with at all, it's usually done for the sake of a good gross-out ( NEKROMANTIK). But Stopkewich manages to find romance -- even humor -- in this strangest of relationships, and it's to her credit that if she doesn't quite make the sex seem appetizing, it's at least palatable. There's not a lot of characterization here: The fetish is the thing, and it's handled with unusual sensitivity. Besides, when was the last time sex in the back of a car meant smooching a cadaver in a hearse? leave a comment --Ken Fox
