Italian immigrant Stefano (Stefano Dionisi) blithely hitchhikes across America until his eyes catch sight of Claudine (Christina Applegate) . Accepting a handyman gig at the Pelican Motel, Stefano becomes smitten with Claudine, who works there as a chambermaid. In no time, he's ready to abandon his carefree existence and settle down with her, but little does Stefano realize that, after hours, the angelic-looking Claudine does more than change sheets. Blighted by her brother's suicide, Claudine has rejected her wealthy background, choosing instead to support herself as a maid by day and exotic dancer by night! Despite the fact that such idiosyncracies as shoplifting, bisexuality and drug abuse don't exactly make Claudine a sure bet for romantic bliss, Stefano is undaunted; in fact, he's downright possessive. After becoming pregnant, then suffering a miscarriage, Claudine decides to travel home to visit her brother's grave, hoping that a healing pilgrimage will help her come to terms with her reckless lifestyle. This modest sizzler benefits mightily from the presence of Applegate and the sparks she ignites with Dionisi, a smoldering newcomer. Otherwise, the undeveloped story registers like leftovers from Tennessee Williams or William Inge. As confused Claudine switches from virginal sundresses to stripper gear, viewers will get the distinct impression this misfit is less motivated by psychological distress than by the screenwriter's infatuation with her sexuality. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
