First a novel by Frederic Wakeman, then a play by Luther Davis, finally a screenplay by Julius Epstein, KISS THEM FOR ME is a pleasant trifle with some wit, some sentimentality, and a touch of Grant's class to round it out. It's WW II and three navy flyers, Grant, Blyden, and Walston, take a much-needed holiday in San Francisco. They're heroes and Walston is even running for federal office in his home state. Klemperer is the public relations officer assigned to look after the men. They rent a hotel suite, despite the shortage of rooms in the city, and decide to toss the party to end all parties. Among the guests are Mansfield, a pneumatic blonde who feels her mission in life is to make the boys feel at home, and Nob Hill sophisticate Parker and her fiance, shipbuilder Erickson. Before the party is over, Parker finds Grant much more desirable than the man she was planning to marry. The book was a cynical look at the way war manufacturers use America's heroes, but that theme was dropped as the film turned the work into a flat-out farce. Epstein was a cowriter on CASABLANCA, Wakeman also wrote THE HUCKSTERS, and Davis wrote the screenplay for that film as well as many other projects. leave a comment
