Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye

1950, Movie, NR, 102 mins

In this particularly brutal Cagney film the great star reverts to the ruthless character he established in PUBLIC ENEMY. Cagney and partner Brodie escape from a prison farm and take refuge in a small town where corrupt elements control the police force. Learning of the police corruption while staying with Brodie's sister, Payton, Cagney proceeds to set up a market robbery while paying crooked cops Bond and MacLane to look the other way. While not busy planning the robbery, Cagney dallies with luscious blonde Payton and kills her husband, Brand, when he objects. When Payton later expresses hatred for him, Cagney mercilessly beats her up. Bond and MacLane (who teamed as the cops dogging Humphrey Bogart in THE MALTESE FALCON) try to extort more money from Cagney, but he records their demands and uses the information to blackmail them. Cagney also blackmails a local politician after setting up the politician's daughter in a compromising position. With payoff money in his pocket, Cagney plans to leave town with another woman, but Payton takes her revenge by killing him. The local cops are exposed and justice--way out in left field in this film--triumphs. The script is poor and production values are at a minimum; only Cagney lifts this mediocre crime melodrama from the dust. Payton would later fall far from grace, ending her days in police courts for prostitution and writing bad checks. KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE made money, despite its failings. leave a comment
