A young Uma Thurman, sizzling with star power before anyone knew who she was, made her movie debut in this bungled psychological thriller. Part-time model Laura (Thurman), whose vivacious mother (Barbara Linton) can't be bothered setting a good example for her daughter, regards most men as meal marks and makes ends meet by picking up businessmen in bars, then Laura drugs them and robs them. The only man the emotionally stunted Laura trusts is her next-door neighbor, William Tilden (Paul Richards), whom she regards as a confidante and surrogate father. But despite his dapper, non-threatening demeanor, William is actually obsessed with Laura and is less than happy when her musician boyfriend, Sid (Paul Dillon), re-enters the picture. Impractical as ever, Syd hopes to reunite his old band and get back together with Laura, and because someone has been following her, Laura welcomes Syd more readily than she once might have. Browbeaten by her vain mom into attending a birthday celebration, Laura arrives late and finders her mother stabbed to death. The freaked out Laura doesn't know whether to turn to Syd or William until she spots Syd wearing a rung that belonged to her mother. Syd's protests his innocence, but Laura rushes to William for paternal protection, unaware that William once harbored incestuous desires for his own daughter, who disappeared mysteriously. Though atmospheric camera work and moody soundtracks can be assets to an independent film, this movie is so dark you can barely what's going on during the night scenes and so poorly recorded that some of the dialogue is impossible to understand — which may be a blessing given the writer and co-screenwriter Peter Ily Huemer's lack of technique and the script's queasy eroticization of incest. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
