ALL THE KING'S MEN
starstarstarstarstar
Not the tepid 2006 version, but producer-director-writer Robert Rossen's Academy Award-winning original 1949 adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's great American novel. This scathing, grimly realistic film, served as a breakthrough for Broderick Crawford, who had previously been confined to B films. As the corruptible Mississippi governor Willie Stark, Crawford let loose a fierce and awesome acting tour de force he never again equaled. He also won an Academy Award for his effort.
