Kingdom Of The Spiders

1977, Movie, PG, 94 mins

A new chemical insecticide kills off the food supply of some deadly desert tarantulas, sending them swarming into the town of Verde, Arizona. Although it sounds like another EMPIRE OF THE ANTS, this film is actually fairly effective. The script is witty, and the horror (as in FROGS) is of the more realistic variety. Here, there are no colossal spiders like the one in TARANTULA--merely some 5,000 live, life-sized tarantulas, which are plenty creepy on their own without being inflated to ridiculous proportions. The terror builds slowly, and director Cardos does a nice job of balancing the chills with a sly sense of humor. Shatner gives an ever-so-slightly tongue-in-cheek performance as a veterinarian investigating the phenomenon. The eerie ending is reminiscent of Hitchcock's THE BIRDS. leave a comment
