King Of Dodge City: Review

The first of eight films that co-starred Elliott and Ritter has the two of them working separately to clean up a post-Civil War Kansas town. Elliott is the famed cowboy Hickok, while Ritter is the new sheriff in town. Eventually their paths cross and they unite to fight off some bad guys in a standard gun-fightin' finish. Along the way Ritter sings three songs. This film operates under what the B-western producers called "the Drake formula." It was named after Oliver Drake, who wrote many of the THREE MESQUITEERS films, and always involved the multiple heroes uniting to solve a problem they'd been working on separately. It's simplistic but made for many a glorious Saturday afternoon in the 1940s. This was the last of ten films that comic sidekick Taylor was to make with Elliott. leave a comment
