Putting aside the question of whether Shakespeare's "King Lear" is adaptable, this film is a superbly acted, exceptionally photographed, emotional powerhouse. Scofield's performance as the king is gripping. He offers his kingdom to his three daughters, Worth, Engel, and Gabold.
