Part fight film, part murder movie, KING FOR A NIGHT traces the rise of small-town boxer Bud Williams (Chester Morris, in a sterling performance) as he punches his way toward the middleweight title over the pacifist objections of his father (Grant Mitchell), a paralyzed minister. Moving to New York City, Bud finds fame, fortune, and floozies galore, little knowing that his sister, Lillian (Helen Twelvetrees), who has been sleeping with promoter Walter Douglas (John Miljan), is responsible for his success. When he finds out, Bud plans to murder Douglas, but Lillian beats him to the punch, prompting the boxer to make the ultimate sacrifice by tampering with the evidence to implicate himself. leave a comment
