KING DAVID is a biblical epic that tells a large story on a smallish scale. Ian Sears is the young David, who slays the giant Goliath (Luigi Montefiori); then Richard Gere takes over as the adult David, playing the character into old age. However, no matter what the makeup men do, he's still Gere. Even on his deathbed he seems to be just a pastier version of the handsome Gere. His acting is all right, but when he doesn't get any older, all believability goes out the tent flap. Locations, costumes, and extras are all painstakingly taken care of. The film falls far short of THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD or many other biblical spectaculars, but most of those movies were made when budgets could be kept in check, so the somewhat less than impressive production values of KING DAVID are understandable. The major fault of the film is the casting of Gere. He's too young and pretty, and he doesn't have the strength needed to make the biblical David come to life. Australian director Bruce Beresford had previously directed BREAKER MORANT and TENDER MERCIES, both far smaller films and far better than this one. leave a comment
