This movie starts off as a light comedy and then takes a dramatic turn. Nolan and Preston (in his screen debut) are radio operators aboard different ships, both owned by Hall. They are continually trying to outdo each other until Hall gets tired of their games and puts them on the same luxury liner. Patrick is a nurse on board the vessel; she dated the two in the past, but won't have a thing to do with them now. The three discover that a group of gangsters is aboard ship and the kindly old lady who recently boarded is actually gang leader Naish, a recent escapee from Alcatraz. The mobsters hijack the ship and order its captain, Carey, to head for Central America. Nolan is shot and wounded while trying to stop the gang, and Patrick is allowed to receive radio instructions on how to remove the bullet. The crew stops the mobsters during the delicate operation, but not before Preston is killed. Patrick completes the task and ends up with Nolan. The tricky switch from comedy to tense drama is masterfully achieved through Robert Florey's direction without the slightest hint of unbelievability. Running slightly less than an hour, the film maintains a nice pace, and the acting is terrific. leave a comment
