This filmed depiction of a novel by Doris Lessing does a good job in capturing the anguish Karen Black goes through in trying to adapt to the climate of Africa, both social and environmental, after marrying a landowner who is himself too sickly to live there. Any power the film does have is mainly a result of Black; everything else is just a background to allow her to go through her histrionics. leave a comment
