A crassly conceived splatter flick that filters its gory chills through tongue-in-cheek delivery that's apparently meant to camouflage its minimal artistic aspirations. Fifteen years ago, the upstanding townspeople of peaceful Perrysburg hunted down and lynched an alleged crazy man. In subsequent years, the village benefited from profits earned by a local meat factory overseen by Jennings Wilhite (Corbin Bersen) and his Chamber of Commerce. Now, the community's harsh past has come back to haunt it. A group of local teens who belong to the "Dare Club," and decide to spend the night in the abandoned asylum where the vigilante hanging took place. Ironically, the daredevil teens are the offspring of the very adults who committed the heinous act. The kids are murdered, one by one and in gruesome ways, as they snoop around the shuttered nuthouse — could the ghost of their parents' victim be exacting otherworldly revenge? Meanwhile, aggressive executive Sarah Fairchild (Dee Wallace Stone) makes a bid to acquire the meat-packing plant for her Ornell food company chain. Unwilling to capitulate to Fairchild's takeover plans or let her research into the factory's operations be made public, Wilhite decides that Fairchild can't leave town alive. Fairchild eventually learns how the lynching of the alleged psychopath was linked to Perrysburg's subsequent prosperity, and it becomes clear that Wilhite's dead scapegoat was an innocent man falsely committed to the asylum. But who has been knocking off the offspring of Wilhite and his cronies? The sole saving grace of this suspense-free slasher picture is its cynical portrait of corporate takeovers as a bloodsport. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
