Sports announcer Mike Jackson (George Brent) takes Johnny Barrows (15-year-old Russ Tamblyn), a juvenile delinquent abandoned by his stepfather, under his wing and introduces him to the Cleveland Indians, who do their best to straighten the kid out, pulling together to win the World Series in the process. The real treat here is a chance to see one of baseball's great championship teams in action, with actual footage of the 1948 Series included in the film. The Indians' then-owner, Bill Veeck, gives a terrific performance, and Hall of Famers Lou Boudreau and Bob Feller also play prominent roles--not just on the diamond.
