Opening any film with vintage footage of the Hindenburg catastrophe is definitely asking for trouble, and while director Matthew Harrison's rambling comedy may not entirely go down in flames, it certainly flirts with disaster. Redmond (Kevin Corrigan) can't put his finger on just what's wrong with his life. He's been kicked out of his New York City apartment, he's lost his job and his sharpie uncle (James Woods) has him dropping off suspicious-looking packages to even more suspicious-looking characters. For Redmond, revelation comes wrapped inside a fortune cookie: "Your attendant godling has lost her way," words he takes to mean that the terminally jaded flight attendant (Linda Fiorentino) he met on the subway will prove to be the dea ex machina his life story so desperately needs. Harrison has both an eye for amusing detail and what is routinely called an ear for dialogue, and he knows just where his strengths lie. The script (cowritten with Corrigan) is brimming with conversations, some very funny, others completely dispensable. What Harrison has yet to develop is an economical sense of narrative: No matter how hard you try, a long string of conversations does not add up to a story. But the attractive cast is game, and Corrigan, who until now has appeared in supporting roles, proves that he can not only carry a picture, he can even almost save one. leave a comment --Ken Fox
