ROCKY IV meets THE KARATE KID meets Jean-Claude Van Damme's feet in this kick-socky saga. As it opens, Kurt Sloane (Van Damme) is helping his brother, Eric (Dennis Alexio), compete in US kickboxing contests. Later, Eric travels to Thailand to test his talents in the land where the sport was born, but is paralyzed there in a match with the fearsome Tong Po (himself). Vowing revenge, Kurt studies with a martial-arts master (Dennis Chan) who has a conveniently single and pretty niece, Mylee (Roshelle Ashana). Kicking his way through some preliminary bouts, Kurt becomes known as the "white warrior" and is soon set to battle Tong Po in the "ancient manner," with the fighters' hands wrapped in hemp that has been dipped in resin and coated with broken glass. To top it off, some crime lords kidnap Eric and Mylee (who is raped by Tong Po) to force Kurt to throw the fight. KICKBOXER deviates little from genre formula in its story of a peace-loving martial artist who is pushed too far and goes on a maniacal rampage in the last reel. Still, nobody goes to these movies for their comic-book plots, klutzy dialog, or hammy acting--all of which KICKBOXER has in abundance. They go for action, and on that level KICKBOXER delivers the goods. leave a comment
