Hunter and Crowley are a nice suburban couple. While using a payphone in the Los Angeles slums, Hunter sees a street gang (led by Hopper) knife another youth. He tells his story to the police and then is terrorized by the gang. Though well-acted, the film is rife with sadism. The ending
resolves things just a little too neatly and glosses over some racial prejudice. Pandro Berman was the original producer of this film but apparently was displeased with the results and had his name struck from the credits, thus giving associate producer Kathryn Hereford the producer's billing.
