UCLA film-school graduate student Sandler tailored the screenplay for KANSAS CITY BOMBER (his master's thesis) for Welch, as a divorced mother of two who becomes one of the stars of a roller derby team when she has an affair with its owner, McCarthy. The other skaters, particularly fiery Kallianiotes, are jealous of Welch's privileged position and make life difficult for her; but Alden, a backwoods behemoth enamored of Welch, becomes her protector. Left to fend for herself when Alden is traded, Welch asserts her independence by refusing to be a part of McCarthy's program.
