Yet another filmed adaptation of a Lawrence novel that fails to capture the intellectual essence or passionate spirit of the book. In 1922 writer Friels and his wife, Davis, arrive in Australia, hoping to find a sanctuary away from the reactionary politics so prevalent in Europe. There Friels is introduced to a militaristic group, with visions of controlling the country, headed by Keays-Byrne, an important Australian military figure in WW I. Keays-Byrne's quest is to rid Australia of what he considers foreign entrepreneurs contaminating the purity of the country.
