This peculiar, high-camp film stars the bigger-than-life German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder as Jansen, a futuristic police lieutenant who must locate a bomb that has apparently been planted in a 30-story office building. The result, an amalgam of West Berlin punk sensibilities and
film noir-comic book archetypes, is as odd and exciting as it is unwatchable and confusing. For those rabid Rainer-maniacs who can't get enough of the late, great director, KAMIKAZE '89 is a must--if only to see Fassbinder in his leopard-skin suit. Others will probably find the goings-on rather
trying. (In German; English subtitles.)
