This family crime picture is sweetened with poochy comedy. On the eve of his retirement, LAPD detective Thomas Dooley, (Jim Belushi) and his canine sidekick, Jerry Lee, stumble upon an industrial espionage crime in progress at Micro Labs. They give chase but fail to apprehend the high-tech thief (Christopher Shyer), who's already killed several guards in his quest to obtain a revolutionary computer chip. Dooley's former boss, Captain Thomas (Blu Mankuma), warns him to butt out of this federal investigation, and Dooley finds himself scrounging for a little extra income. He hits on the idea of offering Jerry Lee's services as a stud, only to find the dog's performance compromised by a microchip he swallowed at the lab — the very same chip the homicidal thief needs to fulfill his obligations. After Jerry Lee's washout on the breeding front, Dooley falls back on their sleuthing talents and opens a detective agency. His first client is looking for her missing fiance, a cryptic figure who could be involved in a string of technology thefts. The FBI thinks Dooley is one of the baddies, but he's actually hot on the trail of the real miscreants, having located accomplice Billy Cochrane (Michael Eklund). Cochrane's death forces Dooley to come up with another plan, so he tries tricking the murderer into thinking he could be bribed with a $2,000,000. "finder's fee" in exchange for the coveted chip. Dooley eventually spots the connection between the microchip slayings and the case of the missing fiance and solves the mystery. Detection takes a back seat to pratfalls and one-liners, but kids and pre-teens will enjoy the film's juvenile sense of humor, which runs from doggie flatulence to canine impotence. --Robert Pardi
