Luck is a lady in this sweet if silly romantic comedy: All Ashley Albright (Lindsay Lohan) has to do is step outside her swank, enormous New York apartment and the rain instantly stops as a taxi rounds the corner. Despite her youth, she's ascended to the heights of her profession — public relations — and has managed to stop an important client, Damon Phillips (Faizon Love), a volatile music mogul, from taking his business elsewhere, by pitching a fantasy masquerade ball for charity. Ashley even has good friends — Maggie (Samaire Armstrong) and Dana (Bree Turner) — who don't bitterly resent her good fortune. Meanwhile, on the other side of Manhattan, fledgling music manager Jake Hardin (Chris Pine) would kill for just a fraction of Ashley's good fortune. His desperate efforts to get Damon Phillips to listen to British pop-rock group McFly leave him mud-soaked, smelling like dog excrement and arrested on assault charges, but he doesn't give up — he instead tries to finagle his way into the big masquerade ball, hoping to slip the band's CD to Damon by posing as a masked dancer. During the course of the magical evening he finds himself on the dance floor with Ashley — he even kisses her. And suddenly luck isn't a lady anymore — Ashley is stricken with broken heels, a night in jail and a flooded apartment, while Jake is saving Damon's life, getting his band signed and living the high life. Ashley is desperate to find the kissing bandit who stole her good fortune, but tracking down a masked man in New York City proves harder than she optimistically imagined. Lohan has a knack for physical comedy that serves her especially well in the movie's first half — it's a shame Pine isn't a more memorable foil, but at least he's easy on the eyes. Love is the designated scene stealer, with his over-the-top wardrobe and "Do you know how much my time is worth?" attitude, while quirky sidekick Armstrong, as well as the McFly boys, seem to be having a genuinely good time. Director Donald Petrie's niche seems to be lighthearted, instantly forgettable romantic fantasies like MISS CONGENIALITY and HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS, and this sweet-natured bit of fluff fits right in: It's enjoyable and profoundly unlikely to make a lasting impression on anyone. leave a comment --Angel Cohn
