JUST A LITTLE HARMLESS SEX

What do women want? Well, one thing they don't want is to have the police call at 3 AM saying their husbands have been busted for pulling a Hugh Grant, which is what happens to Laura (Alison Eastwood). Alan (Robert Mailhouse) swears he didn't know that the girl was a hooker — it was late and dark and raining and her car was broken down by the side of the road — but Laura throws him out anyway, and he seeks consolation in the company of best pals Danny (Jonathan Silverman, of TV's The Single Guy) and Brent (William Ragsdale). She, meanwhile, calls in girlfriends Terrianne (Jessica Lundy) and Allison (Kimberly Williams) for a night of serious marguerita swilling. The cute gimmick is that it took two screenwriters, a man and a woman, to write the script: Marti Noxon (co-producer of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series) penned the women's scenes, Roger Mills wrote the ones for the men, and the two collaborated on the final sequences in which everyone — including Laura's sexy mom (Lauren Hutton) — converge on HiJinx, a local club. Produced and directed by Rick Rosenthal, who got his start with HALLOWEEN II, this slickly packaged trifle covers some very familiar ground: A glance through a couple of randomly selected issues of Cosmo and Maxim would provide the same insights into the minds of men and women. But the attractive, accomplished cast, snappy score by Tito Larriva (who also plays a supporting role), and all-around handsome production values go a long way to making it stand out from the indie gabfest pack. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
