Just Imagine

1930, Movie, NR, 104 mins

There's not much here in terms of story, but what this picture does have is worth the price of admission. Set in the future world of 1980, it concerns government-approved marriages and Brendel's attempt to show that he is worthy to take the 19-year-old O'Sullivan as his wife. To prove himself, he hops in a rocket and takes off for Mars, where everybody has a twin. The futuristic sets of Manhattan aren't so far off base, nor are the videophones, automatic doors, or test-tube babies. All the characters' names are numbers, and the costumes are so bizarre they would probably sell in some chic boutique. Add to all this an array of very bad songs and there is the potential for cult movie status. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Interior Decoration (losing to CIMARRON). The songs include: "The Drinking Song," "The Romance of Elmer Stremmingway," "Never Never Wed," "There's Something About an Old-Fashioned Girl," "Mothers Ought to Tell Their Daughters," "I Am the Words, You Are the Melody," "Dance of Victory," and "Never Swat a Fly" (cut from the original 113m version). leave a comment
