Just Around The Corner: Review

The first Temple film that was not a major box office hit, this one has 10 year-old Shirley cast as the daughter of architect Farrell. Wiped out by the depression, he goes from the penthouse to the basement, figuratively and literally, as his financial troubles force him to move out of his posh top-floor apartment to take over as the building's maintenance man. Gruff millionaire Gillingwater leases the vacant apartment, and by film's end Temple has charmed him into coming up with the money to give Dad a second chance. The plot line is even weaker than usual for a Temple vehicle, but sprightly musical numbers keep things rolling. Davis and Lahr join Temple on "This Is a Happy Little Ditty," and she also sings "I'm Not Myself Today," "I'll Be Lucky With You," and the title tune. She teams up with Robinson for a song and dance on "I Love to Walk in the Rain," and he does a solo on "Brass Buttons and Epaulets." Songs are by Walter Bullock and Harold Spina. Good VCR fare--just fast-forward to the songs and skip the inane plotting. leave a comment
