Once again the Italians copy RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and come up with a cheap, gaudy adventure yarn. Adventurer and guide Connelly is hired in 1938 Malayasia by museum curator Costa to help find the fabulous Ruby of Gloom, hidden in the back of an enormous system of caverns where all sorts of pitfalls for cliffhanging wait around every corner. When the characters aren't barely making it across chasms, they're fighting off ugly Asian pirates. Nothing here to distinguish this effort from a hundred others just like it, even down to the semiobligatory appearance of Van Cleef--sometimes dressed all in white, sometimes all in black. Production values are low, and the music is awful. The film doesn't even have decent action scenes--bad in what is purportedly an action film. leave a comment
