This is the eighth film in MGM's profitable and entertaining "Andy Hardy" series, starring Mickey Rooney as the brash youth with a heart of gold. This time Andy gets in trouble with girls and money when he tries to manipulate the results of an essay contest with a cash prize. His wise father (Lewis Stone) steps in to give the mixed-up but well-meaning fellow some sage advice, and the family is also drawn closer when Mrs. Hardy (Fay Holden) comes down with a life-threatening case of pneumonia. Ann Rutherford is back as Andy's girl pal, Polly Benedict, though she gets some competition this time from June Preisser as Euphrasia Clark. MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer took special interest in the popular Hardy series and kept a careful eye on the production of each one of these lucrative films; it was Mayer who "scripted" Andy's prayer for his mother's return to health. With this film George B. Seitz went back to directing the series, after the brief lapse of ANDY HARDY GETS SPRING FEVER. The results are excellent, making this a fine addition to the series. leave a comment
