Joy

1983, Movie, NR, 100 mins

A sexual bore that stops just short of actual pornography. Based on what is purported to be a thinly veiled autobiography, JOY is no joy. Udy plays the title role, a fun-loving, very attractive model who is in love with her father. Her dad left long ago when she caught him making love, and this is the driving force behind her desire to find an older man who will take care of her. Naturally, her quest becomes the entire raison d'etre for the film, and a series of sexual adventures follow. They have attempted to meld Freud, the Electra complex, and sex; wrap it up in glossy cinematography; and sell it to an unsuspecting audience. Whereas EMMANUELLE and some of the better soft-core films at least have some leavening humor to take the sting out of the heavy breathing, here there is virtually none of that. The picture is a succession of cinematus interruptus sequences that only punctuates what little ersatz psychological balderdash they serve. Director Bergon comes from the world of commercials; his eye is good, but he must learn that the play, not the lens, is the thing. leave a comment
