Chamberlain, a law student in the late 1920s, marries girl-next-door type Mimieux, despite their parents' objections. His wealthy father, Kennedy, tries to break up the marriage by withdrawing financial support. Chamberlain takes a job as a night watchman, and Mimieux works as a babysitter for Tetzel, who is having an affair with married man Homolka. Mimieux consorts with some of the small town's other outcasts, including Davis, a gay florist. When she finds out she is pregnant, she leaves Chamberlain to save him from future worries. Kennedy, seeing how unhappy his son is, brings them back together. The film is a bit melodramatic, and the direction is uneven. Chamberlain's performance is average, and Mimieux isn't too bad. The film is based on the novel by Betty Smith, who also wrote A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. leave a comment
