Chamberlain, a law student in the late 1920s, marries girl-next-door type Mimieux, despite their parents' objections. His wealthy father, Kennedy, tries to break up the marriage by withdrawing financial support. Chamberlain takes a job as a night watchman, and Mimieux works as a babysitter
for Tetzel, who is having an affair with married man Homolka. Mimieux consorts with some of the small town's other outcasts, including Davis, a gay florist. When she finds out she is pregnant, she leaves Chamberlain to save him from future worries. Kennedy, seeing how unhappy his son is, brings
