Bujold plays a girl rescued from drowning by Vernon. He brings her to the commune he has established in the mountains of Quebec. Although she remains silent at first, Bujold watches the activities of the residents and falls in love with Vernon. She finally starts talking and cements her membership in the group by helping in the birthing of a calf. In an unclear deja vu revelation, she decides that she's been there before and that by staying she is a bad omen. So she has Vernon return her to the river where he found her.
