This film, beautifully photographed by topnotch cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, is good-hearted family fare marred by a hopelessly naive conclusion. Set on the Olympic Peninsula and San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest, the film concerns the dilemma facing a tribe of native Americans. Teenager Bettina, her brother, and two white friends from Chicago are pitted against Acierto, a college-educated member of the tribe, and his white college chum, a real-estate speculator, who are determined to turn a sacred island burial ground into a multimillion-dollar resort. Though the older members of the tribe are against violating the sacred ground, younger members see only a lucrative windfall in the offing, and it is up to Bettina and her friends to expose the schemers and save their tribal land. Ostensibly a lesson in environmental protection, respect for native American culture, and the exploitation of that culture by the white man, JOURNEY TO SPIRIT ISLAND negates whatever impact it might have had by making an Indian the villain and a white businessman the noble hero. If you can get past the film's blame-the-victim logic, it may be possible to enjoy the gorgeous scenery captured by Zsigmond's camera. And as a Disneyesque sort of adventure, with well-scrubbed, plucky teenagers as the protagonists, the film should appeal to youngsters. leave a comment
