A satire on the dangers of technology, the film takes a small incident--the imprisonment of the Italian Minister of the Interior (Gastone Moschin) in his specially designed, super high-tech, antiterrorist limousine--and turns it into an intelligent, although not terrificly funny, comedy. Tognazzi, a boot-licking member of the Italian parliament whose undersecretaryship was vetoed by the minister, is out for a stroll when he finds the stalled limousine and has it pushed into the garage on his estate. After this, a variety of peculiar events occur. These, judging from the title, were destined by technological advances to happen. A pair of technical experts, whose names translate as "Godhelpus" and "Praytogod," do their best to free the minister. Telephone calls for help are repeatedly connected to a local pizza parlor. Tognazzi's wife, Esposti, has an affair with Red Brigade terrorist Jannacci. Tognazzi's daughter, Golino, handcuffs herself to an unwitting policeman and pleads with him to deflower her. Curiously, Wertmuller's comedy falls flat, but if one believes that her intent is not to make audiences laugh but to make them think about the absurdity of technological dependence, the film can be viewed as a success. Fans of Golino, who made a big splash in 1988 with RAIN MAN and BIG TOP PEE-WEE, will delight in seeing the peppy 16-year-old in her first film role.
