When the captain of a ship transporting $5 million worth of Free French bullion from Casablanca to New Orleans is found dead on his abandoned vessel, his son Johnny Angel (Raft) vows to find his father's murderers. Angel, who is also a ship's captain, makes the most of his waterfront
contacts and enlists the help of Celestial O'Brien (Carmichael), a bon-mot-slinging cab driver, as he scours New Orleans for clues. Though much of the acting is only ordinary, director Edwin L. Marin's moody, complex film is suffused with effective
film noirisms. New Orleans is the backdrop and
the photography is excellent, but too much talk and not enough action mar the film.
