It's big, expensive, and sometimes tedious, in the style producer Bronston made acceptable if not famous, with Stack in the most important role of his on-and-off career. Stack is America's greatest naval hero, John Paul Jones, who begs a tiny command out of the impoverished Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War. He wins great battles but is seldom recognized and he even delivers the famous line, "I have not yet begun to fight!" during the heroic battle between the American warship Bon Homme Richard and the British Serapis. Following the conclusion of the war, Stack urges the Congress to maintain a strong Navy but is ignored. The pesky seaman is gotten out of the way by being sent to Russia to help out Catherine the Great. He meets Catherine--Davis in a startling 60-second cameo--then goes on to win more sea battles in the Black Sea. Ill, Stack returns to France, long his home, where he dies in the arms of Pavan, a royal lady who has spurned him in the past, as has another, O'Brien, because of his lowly station in life. Stack is believable if not energetic in this somewhat wooden biopic, which comes alive especially during the battle scenes. Farrow's direction flags between the action scenes, and the overlong film grows boring in spots. Carey, as the patriotic Patrick Henry, and Coburn, as the crusty but wise Benjamin Franklin, are well cast, but Pavan is a disaster; she cannot act and, worse, she appears unattractive and even ill. leave a comment
