Everybody Loved Peter Boyle

We knew him as Frank Barone, the gruff grandpa who made merry mischief with his sons, his long-suffering wife Marie and his horrified in-laws for nine seasons on Everybody Loves Raymond. Also as the comical monster of Young Frankenstein, tapping and yowling to “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” And let’s not forget Clyde Bruckman, the wry, melancholy psychic who foresaw his own death (among others, including Mulder’s) in one of the most memorable X-Files episodes ever. It was for that X-Files guest shot that Peter Boyle won his Emmy in 1996, but he won America’s heart (and was nominated seven times) as the most curmudgeonly of the comic engines in the splendid ensemble cast of Everybody Loves Raymond, one of the last great classic TV comedies. His cranky rapport with Doris Roberts, who played Marie to his Frank, was so popular they reprised their roles for several retro Alka-Seltzer commercials after Raymond folded. It was great seeing them again, reminding us of h... read more

Stargate Crossover Q&A, Preview and More!

Stargates' David Hewlett and Amanda Tapping

It's taken four years, but on Friday, July 28, at 9 pm/ET, the crew of Sci Fi Channel's Stargate SG-1 visits their Atlantis brethren for a crossover episode all about — what else? — saving the galaxy. SG-1's comely scientific genius, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), and Atlantis' annoyingly brilliant Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) must destroy the Ori's Supergate or they'll all be prostrating before false gods before they can say, "O'Neill, help!" We talked to Tapping and Hewlett, combatively acerbic buddies in real life, about the shows and their roles. TV Guid read more

Beauty and the Geek After two...

Beauty and the GeekAfter two months, eight couples, chest waxes, a round of strip poker, a lingerie fashion shoot and a final elimination round going into triple overtime, a new beauty and geek were at last crowned. I'm a bit disappointed that Cher and Josh ended up taking the prize over Joe and Brittany since Cher got on my nerves about 99 percent of the time. But I do have to hand it to Josh: He's definitely made the biggest improvement and could always be counted on as a source of entertainment. They even spent a good amount of time on how Josh was finally able to get into the hot tub, which he dubbed his "social baptism." It took a lot of guts to show off his 5-foot-4, 104-pound figure, since he admitted his body was "not a won read more

Beauty and the Geek With $250,000...

Beauty and the Geek With $250,000 on the line, tonight's episode should have been a bit more exciting, but at least we still heard brilliant one-liners from our beauties and geeks. It all kicked off with Joe hoping to beat Cher and Josh — "I feel like it’s a Herculean task and we're just waiting for impending doom." Wow, Joe, I had no idea how poetic you could be!   Task 1 was to make a video message thanking their partners for everything they've accomplished. Josh began his with "you know when I came to this house, with how nervous I am around attractive women and being lactose intolerant.... " I’m not really sure how Cher helped him become more tolerant of dairy products, but whatever. Maybe I'm giving Josh too much att read more

Beauty and the Geek In the past,...

Beauty and the Geek In the past, I guess I always fast-forwarded (thank you, DVR) through the opening credits, but I finally heard the lyrics of the show's theme song (the Pet Shop Boys' "Opportunity"): "I've got the brains; you've got the looks. Let's make lots of money." That Ashton Kutcher is just so creative. Anyway, the beauties finally learned the age-old lesson, "Don't judge a book by its cover." It all kicked off when the girls were extremely nervous about having to ask one of the guys in the house (other than her partner) out on a date. Brittany chose Ankur, although she said she wasn't sure what they would talk about because she "likes Diet Coke and he likes fruity stuff." But to everyone's surprise, including mine, it was smo read more

Dancing with the Stars Tom Bergeron...

Dancing with the Stars
Tom Bergeron
was faster than the quickstep with his off-the-cuff humor tonight — calling the rowdy audience soccer fans, warning the judges not to tell Drew Lachey he wasn't "in sync," suggesting that Master P start a line of dancing shoes. I was also tickled by the way George Hamilton was orchestrating all these little soap-operatic scenes for the moments just before the commercial. I'm glad some people are taking the competitive edge off things.

Lisa and Louis: I always thought of the rhumba as Baby and Johnny's dance from Dirty Dancing. Even without the lift, this was much dirtier. But what, dear god, is up with choosing that read more
