The last piece journalist Joseph Mitchell ever wrote for The New Yorker was a two-part profile of Joe Gould, a homeless Greenwich Village eccentric who claimed to be working on a monumental history of the 20th century called "The Oral History." It's a great story — a literary mystery about an enigmatic character and a snapshot of a New York City that's long gone — and director/star Stanley Tucci has managed the difficult task of transforming it into a warm, utterly beguiling film.
