The heroine of this Dreiser tale, Sidney, is a woman beset by a series of tragedies, including the deaths of two lovers and her daughter and estrangement from her family. Gering and a competent cast make the most of the story's melodramatics. This was the second time Sidney starred as one of Dreiser's doomed characters, the first time being in AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY (1931). leave a comment
