Disappointing screen adaptation of Paul Rudnick's hilarious Off Broadway comedy about a gay New Yorker (Steven Weber) who swears off sex in a moment of AIDS panic. JEFFREY wears its crossover ambitions on its sleeve, and its anxious catering to straight ticketbuyers ruins the fun for
everybody: in one painfully flat episode, director Christopher Ashley seeks to defuse a moment of "tension" -- the two male leads locking lips -- by cutting to a movie audience gasping in shock. Although Trekkers may relish the opportunity to see Patrick Stewart as an interior decorator (even
here, Picard isn't nearly as campy as Kirk), everyone else should probably stick to ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES: it's choice Rudnick and gayer to boot.
