Despite the participation of MOONSTRUCK screenwriter John Patrick Shanley, a fine cast, and director Pat O'Connor (CAL), THE JANUARY MAN is a disappointing movie that plays like something that had languished at the bottom of Shanley's desk drawer since his student days. A wouldbe offbeat police thriller with a dash of romance and a quirky sense of humor, the film follows the efforts of maverick police detective Nick Starkey (Kevin Kline) to catch a serial killer in New York City. Along the way, he tries to rekindle old passions with his icy sister-in-law (Susan Sarandon), then falls for a much worthier woman who is also the mayor's daughter (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). Faced with the complexity of the relationships and the script's wild variances in mood, O'Connor seems to have just dug in and shot the film as efficiently as possible, a slick but detached approach that merely calls attention to the flaws of Shanley's disjointed screenplay. The actors, too, coast through their roles, though Mastrantonio, Danny Aiello, and Alan Rickman manage to do sensitive work. leave a comment
