A decent adaptation of Mazo de la Roche's novel concerning the lives and loves of the eccentric Whiteoak family who live on their palatial estate, Jalna, located in beautiful southern Ontario. Manners plays a young novelist who meets and marries Johnson while on a trip to New York. He brings his shy bride back to Canada where she is soon bombarded with the problems of his entire family. After sorting out the rather maudlin developments that transpired in his absence (this brother married that illegitimate daughter of that neighbor, etc.), Manners begins some extramarital adventures that focus on Lamont, the "sexy dame" who turned up on the family's porch one day.
