In Hollywood, it seems, everyone has a script, and nearly everyone is an aspiring director. This is especially true among members of film crews, many of whom take entry-level jobs in hopes of getting their big break. On occasion the breaks come, and promising new talent is given a chance to shine. Such was the case with the unjustly ignored JACK'S BACK, a surprisingly effective low-budget mystery written and directed by ex-gaffer Rowdy Herrington and coproduced by ex-key grip Tim Moore. Boasting a strong dual-role performance by James Spader (LESS THAN ZERO), the film is set in Los Angeles as the city is menaced by a serial killer who patterns himself after the infamous Jack the Ripper. Exactly 100 years after the original murders this new Jack kills prostitutes in the same manner as his forbearer. When Spader, a young medical student who may have inadvertently stumbled upon the killer, is murdered, his mysterious twin brother (also Spader) arrives to investigate. Despite a few clunky plot devices designed to get the story going, JACK'S BACK is a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller that will keep even the most ardent mystery fans guessing. Cleverly scripted and well directed by Herrington, the movie doesn't waste one moment. Herrington sustains suspense while skillfully negotiating the complicated shifts of his plot. A sense of dread permeates the film, as the characters, and the audience, can't decide whom to trust. leave a comment
