This modest but compelling drama received only a brief theatrical release; it's a must-see on video for the performances, not the predictable story. Robert De Niro stars as "Megs" Megessey, nicknamed "Jacknife" in Vietnam because of his fondness for wrecking vehicles. Back Stateside, with the war long over, Megs is still a bit strange, and tends to irritate his war buddy Dave (Ed Harris)--who would just as soon forget both Vietnam and Megs. When Megs unexpectedly arrives at the house Dave shares with his sister, Martha (Kathy Baker), and subsequently begins a romance with her, Dave is forced to face some uncomfortable truths about himself, his memories, and his relationships with Megs and with Martha. Though it's stage origins show (adapted from Stephen Metcalfe's Strange Show), and we're cooked on 'Nam sigificance (with the flasbacks here particular eyesores), all three leads are splendid in their roles. leave a comment
