It's Tough To Be Famous: Review

Fairbanks plays a hero who doesn't want to be one. The story was based on a novel that wasn't even in the bookstores before the film was out. Fairbanks is a young submarine officer whose sub sinks. To save the men, he sends them out on the torpedo tubes, sacrificing himself in the process, but Navy divers get to him just in time. He receives a big welcome back in New York, complete with ticker-tape parade and all types of offers from publicity-hungry firms. To escape, he marries his longtime girl friend, Brian, but the continued barrage of publicity nearly drives them apart. A good early film that shows our obsession with heroes and how we sometimes smother them in the process. leave a comment
