It's Never Too Late: Review
This strange, surrealistic film from Spain features Christie as an amiable 73-year-old spinster obsessed with a newlywed couple whose apartment window faces her own. She gets to know the couple, continually making excuses to drop over, particularly when the wife (Molina), is away. On one visit she steals a wedding picture of Molina and her husband, Gomez, and replaces Molina's face with a photograph of herself. After watching the couple make love Christie believes herself to be pregnant. A visit to an extremely surprised doctor proves this to be true, a fact that stuns Christie's family. Meanwhile, Molina is convinced that her husband is seeing another woman, never realizing that the affair is only in the mind of their odd drop-in guest. The film develops its offbeat story in a straightforward, conventional style that doesn't always jibe with the strange plot developments (much in the manner of modern-day South American writers Marquez and Allende). The story is engaging, however, and the cast handles the material nicely. (In Spanish; English subtitles.)
