A series of 32 vignettes that illustrates the ups and downs of life in modern Italy. Highlights include a very funny sequence starring Magnani as the tired mother of three children who tries to maneuver her clan across a busy street in order to buy some ice cream. By the time the hair-raising adventure is over, the store has run out of treats. The shop owner recommends that the family try a nice drugstore that has just opened across the street. Other sketches portray tourists having to ask other tourists the location of historical landmarks; a young Italian man who is relieved to hear that although his fiancee has been involved with robbery, kidnaping, and murder, she has remained a virgin; a dashing young man who goes to great lengths to seduce an attractive married woman only to loathe her presence eventually because he cannot get rid of her; etc. Some stories are stronger than others, but the film adds up to a fairly entertaining whole.
