Dix and Wray are a couple of fading western stars trying to make the transition to sound. Wray is considerably more successful than Dix, whose voice isn't very appealing. Dix is without a job but decides to stay in Hollywood anyway, and soon goes broke, refusing to take roles in gangster movies because of his squeaky-clean image. When he meets Burrud, a crippled child who idolizes the old cowboy, he is rejoined by Wray. She quits the silver screen, feeling that she cannot perform well without Dix at her side. Of course the money-minded producers don't want to lose Wray so they find a role for Dix. Even though this was a decidedly B-film effort, critics unfairly compared it with another Hollywood film released that year, a blockbuster entitled A STAR IS BORN, slamming IT HAPPENED IN HOLLYWOOD for not measuring up to the Janet Gaynor film. The Dix film does have a startling scene that depicts a lavish Hollywood party replete with major celebrities, including James Cagney, Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Mae West, and Ginger Rogers, except that these stars are not really present, their cameo appearances made by their doubles. Victor McLaglen is even substituted by his brother, Arthur. leave a comment
