The perpetually stoical Erich von Stroheim heads a spy ring and enlists the aid of dancer Romance, the mistress of a British officer. She persuades the officer to steal some secret plans, but he is careless and gets caught. During a prison stint, he escapes and joins up with von Stroheim.
Loyalty looks the officer in the eye, however, and he exposes the spy ring. He is the only one of the three to escape death. Thinking that Romance has talked, von Stroheim kills her, only to be downed by the gun of the officer. Released in France in 1939, this is a well-made spy film copenned by
Jacques Companeez (THE LOWER DEPTHSd;, CASQUE D'OR). (In French; English subtitles.)
